East Bergholt Church by John Constable R.A. (English, 1776-1837) Oil on canvas, 55.2 x 45 cm. Constable is one of the best-known British landscape painters, and the Gallery is fortunate to own the only Constable painting in a public collection in South Africa. Its purchase was made possible by donations from the public of Durban in 1984.

Portrait of T.S. Eliot by Wyndham Lewis (English, 1882-1957) Oil on canvas, 133.3 x 85.1 cm. This incisive portrait of the well-known poet is a fine example of the Vorticist style prevalent in England during the 1930's. An audio-visual programme is available for viewing in the Gallery on request.

Monster Field by Paul Nash (English, 1889-1946). Paul Nash was a British war artist during both the First and Second World Wars. His observation reflects the destruction caused by war. The transformation of a natural object into a menacing force gives this work its strength.
