FASHION SHOW

Technikon Natal's 1996 Fashion Show, aptly titled Movers and Shakers, reflected the high quality of work coming from this institution which has produced some of the top designers in South Africa.

The accent was on comfortable, wearable clothes, in earthy and natural colours with a strong emphasis on simplicity and good cut.

Winning design by Melanie Oliver was made of handwoven grass and raffia with wire and guineafowl feathers. The designs were inspired by Melanie's childhood at Mala Mala (featured on page 1 of October D'ARTS).

The joint winners of best casual wear range design were Vuyelwa Wellem and Melissa Botha.

BRIDAL

A big hit was a bridal gown with a difference using Michaelangelos's famous sculpture, The Pieta, as a motif on the skirt. Nandi Sipalma received a judges' special award for her classic menswear in raw silk, featuring a superb floral jacket in pinks and creams.

The undisputed winner of Most Innova-tive range went to Tracy Kane-Berman for her futuristic technological garb.

NATURAL DIARY

The Original Natural Living Diary for 1997, like its three popular predecessors, is presented within a theme which com-bines the many diverse aspects of life.

This year the theme is music in all its possibilities and variations with the marimba music being the focal point.

"In order to tune in to what this diary is all about," says creator Pnina Weiner, "one should drop all preconceptions about what a diary should be. This one is more than a mere set of blanks in which to record things to do and things done.

"It is at once a faithful record keeper and a worthy source of knowledge, inspira-tion and practical hints. It combines slick time management with timeless truths about the human condition and how - through music, natural eating and healthy living - we can enhance our lives."

TIME OUT

The diary encourages the user to take time out to consider a forgotten emotion or a long-lost song, writing down a key word for the day and focusing on it. Each day has a chosen grain based on the seven day astrological rhythm. Food gardening is promoted with meal ideas for a day's harvest.

This is Pnina Weiner's fourth Original Natural Living Diary. "Without moralising," she says, "the diary engenders respect for the environment and our place in the rhythm of nature." The delightful illustrations add a quirky dimension to musical myths, legends, anecdotes and quotes.
