9TH EISTEDDFOD

The 9th International Eisteddfod of South Africa takes place from September 26 to October 5 next year at Roodepoort. Many competitions, interaction work-shops and variety concerts feature in what is believed to be the biggest music/folk dance festival in Africa!

The Eisteddfod attracts the world's best amateur performing groups and soloists. Youngsters and adults alike may partici-pate in traditional folk music and dance both old and contemporary as well as mixed, male, female, sacred music and chamber choirs.

There are sections for vocal and instru-mental classical music as well as brass, percussion, symphonic wind, jazz and "any instrumentation" bands. There is also a section for composers.

Beside a trophy to be won in each cate-gory, there are gold, silver and bronze levels of achievement, and a number of "outright best performance" prizes.

Prospective candidates in the solo as well as group competitions have to submit auditioning cassettes.

For an International Syllabus write to Eisteddfod '96 Secretariat, Box 738 Roodepoort, 1725, Gauteng. Phone (011) 472-2820/fax (011) 472-1014, or E-mail iesa@infodoor.co.za.

IN MEMORIAM

Radio personality Jeanette Hanekom died last month at the age of 74 after a long illness. She was well-known as a presenter of women's programmes, news and in-depth interviews on Radio Port Natal, which she helped to launch in 1967, until she left in 1982.

Last month also saw the passing of Hayden Bradfield, one-time Mayor of Durban, who was the director of the Durban Tattoo for many years and instrumental in bringing some of the world's top military bands to Durban.

Another sad loss was part-time actor David Randle whose passion for heraldry was featured in D'ARTS earlier this year. His extensive knowledge of the works of Gilbert and Sullivan was featured in a 13-part radio series Of Ballads, Songs and Snatches.
