MUSIC

MENYATSO MATHOLE

Hot new jazz outfit the Menyatso Mathole Quartet performs at Funky's restaurant and bar at the BAT Centre every Sunday at 18h00. Cape Town based guitarist Menyatso Mathole was one of the original members of success-ful jazz band Sakhile along with local guitar legend, Sipho Gumede.

Sakhile was around for just over 10 years, disbanded in the early 90s, and recently came together for a concert at Durban City Hall.

Menyatso, who played on Sakhile's four albums, performs a style of jazz which is a rich brand of afro-jazz based loosely on the mbaqanga sounds. Most of his music is original but includes a small selection of African jazz standards. Performing with him are Lex Futshane on bass, Dumisani Hlela on drums and Mandla Mgabhi on percussion.

There is a normal couvert charge. To book a table call Funky's on 368-2029.
