DURBAN ARTS

DA LUNCH CONCERTS

Every Wednesday at 13h00 Durban Arts presents free lunch-hour concerts on the City Hall steps. These concerts aim to promote local talent and many top bands made their first appearance on `The Steps' for Durban Arts.

Nov 6: LEKHUNUTU GOSPEL GROUP (GG) - Eight musicians from Clerment Township present entertaining choreography. The group's leader Mr Maphumulo plays the keyboards and has also composed some of the songs.

Nov 13: WINSTON TOSH MARLEY - a reggae singer from Sydenham who has been on the music scene for more than five years. A four-piece band will accompany him.

Nov 20: OSINDISWENI HIGH BROTHERS - the eight Mdletshe brothers led by the eldest, Dumsani. Their speciality is isicathamiya songs with a message and eye-catching choreography.

Nov 27: ABABEKEZELI BAND - Siphiwe Ngubane is the leader of this African soul group which consists of three singers, lead guitarist, rhythm guitarist, bass player and drummer. A top performance group not to be missed.

For more information on the City Hall Steps concerts contact DAA music co-ordinator Patrick Zungu on 23-1236.

DYNAMIC VISION

Enclosed in this issue is a letter to members introducing what Durban Arts believes is a dynamic new vision submitted by the association's chairman, Mi Hlatswayo. Durban Arts would appreciate it if readers would peruse this document and return comments as soon as possible so that Metro Council can be presented with a mandate from members.

Your views may be phoned in to 23-1236, faxed to 23-2073 or posted to Durban Arts, 316 Avondale Road, Durban, 4001.

(Editor's Note: The support from members and D'ARTS readers for our awareness campaign questionnaire and the Arts against Violence petition was considerable and much appreciated. More of the same for this project, please!)

ORGAN RECITAL

There will be no organ recital in the City Hall this month. Don Powell features as organist at the next free recital which will be held on December at a date to be finalised. This concert will have a distinct Christmas flavour!

SUPPORT FROM DA

Durban Arts projects manager Patrick Zungu and community services officer Brenda Toko attended the Sithengile Secondary School's cultural day in Clermont recently.

They introduced Durban Arts to the school at the event which was opened by the school choir and included an art exhibition.

MUSEUM PROJECT

The Film Museum Project (FMP) recently acquired a much sought-after 16mm film editing machine known as a "Steenbeck" Table which will be used during the 16mm film workshop planned by FMP for 1997.

The project is still searching for permanent premises. If you can help, contact Lindi or Mikhail at 23-1236. E-Mail PEPPAS@MTB.UND.AC.ZA.
