SA ENGLISH

The result of the most extensive and detailed research ever undertaken into the history of English in South Africa, A Dictionary of South African English documents the English language as it has developed within all of the country's communities. Coverage extends from the 16th century to the present day, with fascinating information about South African history, as well as revealing the unique character of the country's multi- lingual and multicultural society.

This authoritative historical record features 47 000 citations which illustrate 5 000 entries covering all forms of the written word: historical and contem-porary, as well as the spoken word of broadcasting and everyday conversation.

The entries include words derived from the many languages which have in-fluenced English in South Africa, namely Dutch, Afrikaans, and the Malayo-Indonesian, Indian, Khoisan, Nguni, and Sotho languages. A wide range of everyday words and phrases are well defined. The cost of this hardback publi-cation is R550.

"We urgently require readers, particu-larly male readers" says Mrs Margaret van der Lingen at Tape Aids. "We're asking that people give just three hours of their time each week and help give all blind and print- handicapped South Africans the joy of listening to their favourite books."

Tape Aids is a good way to improve vocal skills while helping a needy cause.

CNA LITERARY AWARDS

The prestigious CNA Literary Awards for South African books written in 1995 will be announced next month to coincide with CNA's 100th birthday and the cere-mony in Gauteng will be hosted by Jona-than Rands and Basetsane Makgalemele, with Janet Suzman as guest speaker.

The CNA Literary Awards no longer divide books into English and Afrikaans categories. Books in all languages, provided they are published by a South African author, now compete for prizes in three categories: creative literature (novels, drama, poetry and short stories); non-fiction (history, biography and travel) and children's books.

There is also a dŠbut award in each category for first-time authors.

ON COMMON GROUND

On Common Ground

is a book of short stories and poems written by youngsters from townships in the Durban Metro area. The purpose of the book was to give young people an opportunity to express painful feelings from the past in writing, serving not only as a peaceful mechanism to release and deal with this anger and fear but it also to give partici-pants self-confidence in learning how to communicate effectively.

Youths from the IFP and the ANC gained insights into each other's lives and developed an understanding for one another. Together they chose the name of the book On Common Ground.
