16MM FILM WORKSHOP

The Film Museum Project continues to make progress with its plans to revitalise the KZN film industry and to establish an interactive film museum in Durban.

As part of its awareness campaign the Museum Project screened films on two projectors at the Durban Arts open forum in August.

A meeting was also held with legendary French filmmaker Jean Rouch during his recent visit to South Africa. He was impressed with Durban and has agreed to return next year to run a 16mm film workshop and to make a film in Durban. Anyone interested in assisting the Film Museum Project or donating equipment should contact Lindi Gross or Mikhail Peppas on 23-1236.

BAT'S MONTHLY VIDEO

The BAT Centre's film unit will screen a double bill, Rabi and Jemina and Johnny, as the October African video.

Rabi

was directed by Gaston Kabore as a modern day fable using traditional African story-telling techniques. The 30-minute film is "a gentle enigmatic exploration of the relationship that Rabi builds up with the tortoise, with his father, with wise old Pusga and with his own conscience."

Jemina and Johnny

, directed by Lionel Ngakane, has been screened around the world and tells the story of a friendship between a black boy and a white girl.

The films will be shown at the BAT resource centre. Admission is R5.

FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL

The 1996 Waterman French Film Festival being presented this month is set to be the largest exposure of French cinema yet in South Africa.

Sponsored by Waterman, the festival takes place at Ster-Kinekor complexes in Rosebank Mall, Johannesburg, (October 4 to 10); Cavendish Square, Claremont, Cape Town, (October 11 to 17) and in Durban at the Musgrave Centre from October 18 to 24.

This will be the first time that the festival has been staged in Durban for many years.

EMBASSY

The French Film Festival was first staged in South Africa in 1977 by the French Embassy and Len Davis, a director of Festival Films (Pty) Limited. In the past the festival has premiŠred a large range of the latest in French cinema not screened in the country outside this event.

The selection for the festival includes the best of recent French productions, retro-spectives of the greats of French cinema, and classics of French cinema.

All films are subtitled in English.

HEAD FOR MANNHEIM

The International Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg in Germany, held from October 11 to 19, is committed to the discovery of unknown talents.

The decision to present a film in this Festival is based on the quality of the individual film and not on the `market value' which already exists in advance.

The international competition will present 100 carefully selected independents, the best films made in the past year.

Contact the organisers at Collini-Centre, Galerie, D-68161 Mannheim. Phone: +49(0)621-102943 or fax to +49(0)621-291564.
