DANCE
SAMBA IN THE SUBURBS
Claudia's Social Dance Centre is holding monthly Latin American and ballroom dancing socials at
the DLI Hall in Grey-ville on October 25, November 28 and December 27 from 19h30 to midnight.
The music will be by well-known Music Unlimited", a 13-piece orchestra that recently played at Sun
City for Rumba in the Jungle.
"The socials will provide dancers ample space to stride it out" says organiser Claudia Moir. "The DLI
hall has a beau-tiful sprung floor and plenty of parking in front as well as behind the building."
Drinks will be sold at club prices and food will be on sale at R30 pp to provide an inexpensive
evening's entertainment.
CHAMPION
A former Natal professional Latin American champion, Claudia has been successfully running her
dance centre for 15 years and has taught thousands of people to dance. She specialises in teaching beginners and
"people who have left feet and no rhythm".
For further enquiries, or to buy tickets, phone Claudia or Faye on 207-2339.
UNFORGETTABLE TOO
The Playhouse Dance Company's festive season incorporates Unforgettable Too,
choreographed by Playhouse Dance Company artistic director Mark Hawkins and performed in the Playhouse Opera
Theatre. Set designer Sarah Roberts has devised sequences around themes such as the city, colours, the beach and
space.
Each sequence is linked to create the impression of a music video.
ARTS UNLIMITED
The television programme on the arts, Arts Unlimited, is transmitted on Thursdays
at 22h10 on SABC3. Arts Unlimited is produced by Allen Auld.
DANCE INDABA
The third FNB Vita Dance Indaba, a festival of original contemporary choreography
and dance, will run at the Nico Theatre, Cape Town, during the first week of October.
One of the highlights of the Dance Indaba is a new work by guest choreographer
Boyzie Cekwana, until recently choreographer-in-residence for the Playhouse Dance Company. Boyzie recently
returned from an extensive trip overseas; in June he participated by invitation at the Inroads Africa
conference hosted in New York by Arts International and 6. This was followed by a stay with the Scottish Dance
Company in Dundee where he created a new work, commissioned by Neville Campbell (formerly artistic director of
Zimbabwe's Tumbuka). In August, he was invited to participate in the Internationale Tanz Wochen
in Vienna Austria, before returning home.
With funding from the Creative Arts Foundation, Cekwana will choreograph a piece on well-known
dancer Vincent Hantam, specifically for the Indaba.
A second section of the work, choreo-graphed on Durban-based dancers, will feature at the
FNB Vita Dance Shongololo in Durban during November. The final 3-part work, bringing together
both these sections with leading dancers from Gauteng, will premiere at the 1997 FNB Vita Dance Umbrella in
Gauteng.
SOCIAL DANCES
There will be an evening of social dancing at the Durban College of Education in Umbilo on October
12 when Eddie Yeadon will play the best music for ballroom, Latin or jive.
Dancing gets under way at 20h00 and entrance is R10. Bring your own refreshments. Details from
207-2424.
FASHION SHOW
The highlight of the Durban fashion scene, the Technikon Natal Fashion Show, takes place on October
10 and 11 in The Loft on the Berea Campus.
"This year's show, Movers and Shakers reflects the clean hard-edged look of the
nineties", said Tony Aboud, head of the fashion department.
Some 24 third-year students are franti-cally working day and night to have their designs ready in time
for the judging. Judges are Alex Botha from Kingsgate Clothing, Greg Wallace from HD Lee, Garth Gething from
John Peter Clothing, Erni Moller (ex-Technikon lecturer) and Christa White, a local couturier designer.
Shows on both days at 18h15 and 21h15 and tickets cost R30 (students R25).
