NATAL TECH FOUNDRY
"We can do it". That's the positive attitude of former Technikon Natal fine arts student George
Holloway who recently took over the Natal Tech Foundry from sculptor Etienne de Kock. "We're fortunate that the
groundwork has already been done," says George, who is assisted by his artist wife Janine. "The foundry has become
a huge resource base for a broad variety of technical skills and processes. It represents years of expertise gained from
the wealth of talented people that have passed through here. They've all left a valuable deposit."
UNIQUE
The Tech foundry is the only one in South Africa operating on a commer-cial basis within an
educational institution. While serving as a training facility, its major function is to take on work from both the artistic
and commercial fields. Judging by the two-ton sculptor by Andries Botha the foundry worked on some years back,
nothing is too big or too small! Artists like Hannah Lurie, Andrew Verster and David Brown have also used the
foundry.
SPECIALISED
Specialised mould-making is another service, not only for bronze but for materials such as concrete
and resins. "And if we can't do it, we'll certainly know someone who can," says George. "The foundry has a huge
potential, both in the artistic and commercial fields - and we're hoping to emulate Etienne's professional and efficient
client service."
Phone the Foundry on 22-2332.
JACK GLATZER
The Friends of Music Society present well-known American violinist Jack Glatzer in concert with
Andrew Warburton on piano in a programme of works by Beethoven, Bach, Saint Saens and Block. They will also
perform the Baal Shem Suite in a concert to be held on September 17 in the Durban Jewish Club at 19h45.
Texas-born Glatzer regularly makes international concert tours and has played on every continent and
in over 40 countries in some of the world's most prestigious venues. His particular interest is the unaccompanied
reper-toire for the violin and he is celebrated for his interpretations of Bach, Paganini and Bartok. He released a CD
in 1994.
