Purcell was commissioned to write Dido and Aeneas for a girl's boarding school in Chelsea. The work is described as "the most significant opera by an Englishman; the only English opera of the past that is continually revived; an opera that remains from first bar to last vibrantly contemporary ..."

The cast comprises local amateur and semi-professional singers and there will also be performances in schools.
