LITERARY AWARDS
Winners of the 1996 Sanlam Literary Award in the published and unpublished categories are Chris
van Wyk and Dr David Medalie. Van Wyk won R4 000 prize for Relatives, considered the best
original short story to appear in book form since the beginning of 1994, while Medalie earned R3 000 for
Recognition.
Relatives
has its roots in a train journey Chris van Wyk underook when he was 21.
Sharing a compartment with two teenage boys from a reformatory he overheard them plotting the murder of the man
who had killed their brother.
Medalie's Recognition uses President Mandela's luncheon for the wives and widows
of prominent political figures of the past as a starting point.

Anglo-de Beers English Olympiad.
Nicholas Mitchell from Grey High School in Port Elizabeth was placed second, while Nicola Watson
from Carter High School in Pietermaritzburg fills the third position. The three top-ranking entrants have won an all-

SA LITERARY HISTORY
A new publication, Rethinking South African Literary History, is a collection of
essays from South African academics who offer fresh perspectives on constructing an innovative literary history in
the context of post-apartheid South Africa. Issues debated include the segre-gation of literary studies into ethno-
linguistic ghettoes; the marginalisation of African languages and literatures and women's writing, and the value of
inter-cultural comparativist studies.
At R95 the book can be ordered from Y Press, 801 Berea Centre, 249 Berea Road, Durban, 4001.
