THE McLEAN SINGERS

The McLean Singers plan to perform Haydn's Creation in December when, as well as the soloists, large number of accompanists are required. This expen-sive venture requires considerable fund-raising. The choir appeals to anyone interested to phone Eileen Richards on 37-5692. Tenors and sopranos would be particularly welcome, but basses and altos are needed as well.

GRANT FOR WORKERS

R20 000 has been granted by the Depart-ment of Arts and Culture, Science and Technology to support a cultural pro-gramme encouraging the creativity of workers on factory shop floors. Durban Arts will facilitate this project which is organised by Brenda Toko.

CRIME PETITION

Enclosed in this issue is a petition launched by Durban Arts protesting against the unacceptable level of violence and crime. Apart from the obvious harm lawless behaviour causes, theatre venues are suffering as people are afraid to go out at night or come into the city.

When completed, the petition should be faxed direct to the Durban Metropolitan Mayor's Parlour on (031) 300-6306. Otherwise contact D'ARTS on 261-6036 and we'll make arrangements to get it to the right channels.

The Mayor's Parlour has agreed to accept this petition on behalf of the arts community. More copies are available from Durban Arts or you may photostat as many as you like. The more signa-tures, the more notice will be taken!.

NOEL IN GENEVA

Durban Arts director, Noel Fairhurst, and his wife are in Switzerland on holiday until early September and they sent an envious D'ARTS a postcard of the impressive 60m high manmade jet fountain on Lake Geneva, the biggest lake in Western Europe. Hope you're eating lots of Swiss cheese and breathing healthy mountain air, Noel and Lizzie!
