VISUAL ARTS
KIMONOS & CHINA
The NSA Mezzanine Gallery is housing an exhibition by two well-known Durban artists, Hannah
Lurie and Martha Zettler, from August 4 to 24.
In this exhibition, Hannah pursues her passion for the Far East, the west coast of Africa and
cuttlefish. Featured is the kimono with its various images depicting bamboo blossom, water, snow etc. She has aimed
to transform these garments into exquisite ceramic reliefs, engraved and painted to resemble silk, beautifully-framed
to contain the Icon.
BONE
Martha is in love with bone china and works exclusively in this medium because of its whiteness and
trans-lucency. She is inspired by the ceramics of Lucie Die and Hans Cooper as well as works from the Bauhaus
period.
In simple but impressive forms, her bone china vessels are very refined. Translucency is achieved
by the high firing and a special sand-blasting technique which gives a tactile quality and three dimensional effect.
Martha recently had four bone china cups accepted for an international exhibition in Koblenz in
Germany.
The NSA is now situated in Bulwer Road next to Bulwer Park.
