CAROL GAINER'S FIRST SOLO

[Gainer Pic]
The NSA Gallery in Bulwer Road cele-brates National Women's Day with an installation by Carol- Anne Gainer from August 9 to 24. Installations work with and in relation to the given site, the exhibition space becoming not just a backdrop to the exhibition but part of it.

Gainer explores the ideas of ritual and sacred spaces. Believing that art-making is a process of ritualization and healing' she has constructed an installation that makes reference to both art and religious forms drawn from a variety of cultures.

Working within a contemporary feminist framework, she also examines gender and issues of identify, focusing her enquiry through what she terms "a quiet exploration of female sexuality and sensuality".

Carol works in a wide range of media - earth, bitumen, tar, resin, photographic images, beeswax, aromatic oils and vabooti (Hindu ceremonial ash).

This is her first solo exhibition.

The NSA Gallery is in Bulwer Park. Telephone: 223-6867/8.

CHATSWORTH FAIR

The ABH/Post Chatsworth Fair again sees the Playhouse Company making its presence felt with a contingent of talented performers.

The Playhouse education and develop-ment department believe in skills and audience development in all communities and in all regions of KZN.

To this end, a variety of performers are being ferried to Chatsworth with the aim of exposing various cultures to a range of other performance and artistic styles. Hopefully, this will ultimately promote understanding and cultural equity.

PERFORMERS

Performers include the Hlanganani Tra-ditional Orchestra, the KwaShaka Gospel Group and the Hluzingqondo Zulu Dancers. In sharp contrast, the choir of King's College, Cambridge, will bring an international flavour to the festival courtesy of the NPO. The Siwela Sonke dance company also appears.

The Chatsworth Fair is open to the public until August 4. The Playhouse Company's support forms part of a greater charity drive, that of fundraising for the Aryan Benevolent Home.

DALISU LOKUKHANYA

One of Durban Arts community projects co-ordinators, Dalisu Khoza, runs the Dalisu Lokukhanya theatre project, closely supported by organiser Jetro Nzama and secretary Mbusi Bhengu.

The project meets either at the Play-house Mayville Complex or at the Little Theatre in the Playhouse administration building in Acutt Street.

"We meet often as we are establishing ourselves," says Dalisu, "and there is a lot to be done which involves the youth in keeping organised together in arts and educational programmes at Cato Crest."

Associate groups are Amajobamhlophe, Unyawo Lendlovu, the Comprehensive Performing Group, Sarafina Young Dancers and African Sound.

On the last Saturday of each month Dalisulokukhanya holds a concert to examine the results of the workshops. Festivals are also planned to take place every three months at the Phambili Sports Grounds.
