RED AND HOT!
Mervyn Goodman has directed and Barry and Dawn Thomson of Strawberry Fields have devised
Red, Hot and Country, the show now running in the Playhouse Cellar until August 11.
Undoubtedly the star, De Wet Wraight puts in a powerful and very musical per-formance. He is ably
supported by coolly-sophisticated Janine Holthuysen. Bouncy Karen van Pletsen's I will Always Love
You was a highlight.
Barry and Dawn Thomson have put to-gether a well-chosen mix of Country rock style songs by
singers such as Sheena Easton, Dolly Parton, the Eagles Kenny Rogers and Shania Twain.
Barry and Colin Peddie also pump out a hot double guitar number.
"Country music is enjoying world-wide recognition at the moment," says Dawn Thomson, "and has
even taken England by storm. South Africa has not had much exposure, unfortunately, but with this line up of names
and well-known songs, country fans are in for a feast!"
Couvert is R27,50 with a three-course meal for R37,50. Cocktail shows on Friday at 17h00 (R20,00
couvert and R12,50 snacks).
BREL'S BACK
Making a welcome return to the Play-house Cellar after their highly successful and all-too-short run
in June is the show "Jacques Brel: Rough Diamond.
This is one of the most sophisticated and well-presented shows seen at the Cellar and features
Christian Deni singing Brel's songs the way he wrote them, in French and Flemish. It is a masterful performance
from this young man.
An equally fine performance comes from Stella Konik who accompanies Christian on the piano and
occasionally - far too seldom, in fact - sings a piece in her attractive low-pitched voice.
Jacques Brel: Rough Diamond
opens in the Cellar on August 13 and will run until
the end of the month.
EL GUAPPO RE-RUN
