ART IN ACTION

Artists' suppliers PW Story will host the fourth annual Art in Action Show at Durban Turf Club on September 13 and 14 from 09h00 to 21h00. There will be demonstrations of art as well as craft exhibitions to stimulate creativity. Well-known artists can be seen in action.

CHILDREN'S ART

The Art Works Trust and NSA outreach programme is holding an exhibition from August 13 to 16 from 10h00 to 20h00 in the Playhouse Grand Foyer.

The exhibition features over 100 of the best entries to the Art Works Trust competition when children were asked to use waste to make a portrait of a president - any president - and to reflect on and write about their experience. Also on show is information on the NSA Outreach Programme.

Both the trust and the outreach pro-gramme share a common concern about the damaging levels of violence, abuse and neglect that children in KZN have been exposed to and believe that art can help in the healing process where children can express feelings of anger and fear or recall painful memories - in a safe place with a skilled guide.

BAT'S FIRST BIRTHDAY

A year old on August 17, the BAT Centre invites all Durbanites to join in the day- (and night-) long celebrations.

For children, from 10h00 there's a mural workshop led by Clement Dube followed by an African contemporary dance workshop with Bheki Mbili.

The Playhouse-Transnet truck will host a wide range of drama and music from 13h00 with some classical music to serenade the sunset! Theatre co-ordinator Bheki Mkwane and his assistant from London, Nicola Strong, have planned experimental drama that will be staged in Funky's as well as on the truck.

VISUAL ARTS

The Upstairs Gallery will host a conglomerate exhibition of photographs, sculpture, paintings, prints and crafts relating to music, specifically jazz.

On view in the Democratic Gallery will be an exhibition of ceramics by Sara Evans who recently completed a year as the resident artist in the University of Nata's fine art department in Pieter-maritzburg campus. There will be a flea market as well as buskers.

BAT co-ordinators present a special show at 19h00 in the Hall and then there will be a big party with live bands.

CLUB ALADDIN

Club Aladdin at 33 North Coast Road hosts jazz sessions every Sunday from 14h00 to 19h00. Apart from resident band Line-Out, there is a special artist every week. Phone 579-2772.
