SMART TALK

When East Coast Radio decided to drop D'ARTS Editor Caroline Smart's weekly 3-minute arts and entertainment slot, the Daily News was quick to offer her space in what was then the Time Out section.

All kudos to the paper for recognising a need for this kind of coverage of the arts. Smart Talk appears every Tuesday in the Daily News Tonight section.

All events information in D'ARTS is considered for this column but if you have anything that is too late for D'ARTS but it could appear in Smart Talk (deadline every Wednesday night for the following Tuesday), phone or fax Caroline on 261-6036.

She also presents a Durban contribution to SAfm's Big Big Brunch every other Saturday between 10h45 and 11h15.

We're slowly getting there regarding full media coverage for the arts!

MOSES "SHAKES" ART

The Democratic Gallery at the BAT Centre is hosting a solo exhibition by Moses "Shakes" Buthelezi until July 9.

The exhibition consists of prints, drawings and printed textiles

D'ARTS ran a story on Moses when he was a mere schoolboy and have watched his artistic progress with interest.

M-NET MOVIES

One of the finest films on the M-Net movie programme this month is Tom & Viv, a movie which earned an Oscar nomination for Miranda Richardson for her role in this drama based on the marriage of poet TS Elliot and his socialite wife Vivienne Haig-Wood.

Based on the best-seller by Ann Rice, Interview with a Vampire stars Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. In The Shawshank Redemption, Tim Robbins is framed for his wife's murder. Morgan Freeman was highly praised for his performance.

One of the top earners on the local circuit, Colour of Night starring Bruce Willis is an erotic murder mystery about a burned-out Los Angeles "shrink".

NOTABLE

Other notable premieres in July are:

For Queen and Country

with Denzil Washington and Amanda Redman and Ruby Cairo with Andie MacDowell and Liam Neeson.

Oscar winner Jessica Tandy died shortly after the completion of Camilla, a charming movie in which she plays an eccentric and high-spirited 80-year-old.

Nora Ephron (Sleepless in Seattle) directs the quirky comedy, Mixed Nuts - about the people who man a suicide hot-line on Christmas Eve.

Tim Robbins, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Paul Newman star in the critically-acclaimed The Hudsucker Proxy about a naive country boy who becomes the head of a toy company.

ACCESS

For those with access to DSTV, M-Net's Movie Magic channel will screen the Three Colours Trilogy - Three Colours Red, Three Colours White and Three Colours Blue. This acclaimed series from the recently- deceased Polish director, Krzysztof Kieslowski, looks at life in today's Europe. The titles stem from the colours of the French flag symbolising liberty, equality and fraternity.

PEACE QUILT

When a group of South African quilt-makers visited the USA in October 1993 they discovered a Freedom Quilt by Jessie Teltair in a book by Cuesta Benberry: Always There - the African American Influence on Quilts.

This sparked off a discussion about a Peace Quilt for South Africa which left in suspension until last year when Odette Tolksdorf put a proposal to the various Seasons Quilt Festival committees in Durban, who eagerly accepted the idea.

WORLD

Information was sent all over the world inviting participants to contribute to the Wall of Peace, a quilt to be exhibited at the Seasons 1996 South African National Quilt Festival (see separate story).

This wall is built of fabric "peace bricks" - a concrete show of commit-ment to peace, in the spirit of masakhane (let us build together).

Participants were asked to send a rectan-gular fabric brick in colours of blues and whites. Any technique could be used but the brick had to relate to peace.

Close on 800 creative and peaceful ideas flowed in from 22 different countries, some in war-torn areas such as Bosnia. Each contained personal and universal symbols of peace inspired by music, poems, people, events and nature. This issue's cover shows a completed quilt.
