NEWS
CLASSIC MUSIC RADIO
Classic Music Radio (CMR) was launched last month and even the orga-nisers were surprised at the over-whelming
response to the idea of this community radio station which aims to serve Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
To date, more than 1700 people have completed questionnaires pledging their support, with at least 40 people offering
their services in a volunteer capacity.
CMR's definition of `classical music' is broad and includes all forms of durable music including jazz and a wide
variety of light music of all periods. It excludes pop and rock.
The accent will be on music rather than talk although programmes about music and matters of interest to music lovers
will be presented along with general news bulletins.
STUDIO
A suitable studio is available at the Playhouse Company's Mayville complex and the station will utilise all available
sources of finance, with the main source of revenue expected from subscriptions, advertising and sponsorship.
If you wish to complete a questionnaire or pledge your support, contact Stephen Wikner of Classic Music Radio by
phoning 369-9437 (o) or 903-32 (h).
QUILT FESTIVAL
Judging by the quilts arriving for the 1996 Seasons Quilts Festival, there will be the most
magnificent and artistic display at this year's festival.
Colleen Roberts, chairperson of the Seasons National Quilt Festival commit-tee, reports that 370
quilts have been received for the competition section which include traditional pieced and appliquŠ; innovative, theme-related,
miniature, group and scholar categories.
For the first time, an `art' section features in the competition line-up.
A fashion contest sponsored by Fabella invites Anything Wearable as well as sections for A
Coat for all Seasons and Wearable Art Fantasy.
HIDE
In addition, there is the Hide and Seek Exhibition which has been travelling for the past year and
has appeared at 14 different venues, including galleries museums and libraries around South Africa. Quilters were challenged to
produce a quilt in which something was hidden and the 46 quilts (exhibited at the Grahamstown Festival last year) are each a delight
in this respect.
PEACE
Other aspects of the festival are the Peace Quilt section (see front cover) and the Silent Auction
where bids can be made to acquire a special quilt. Judy Breytenbach has made a quilt to be raffled during the Festival, part of the
proceeds will go to Highway Hospice.
Workshops, lectures and classes in quilting will run in conjunction with the Festival and buses will be decorated as
patchwork as will the floral banks surrounding the City Hall.
The Seasons 1996 Quilt Festival exhi-bition takes place in the Durban City Hall from July 9 to 14.
KZN-2 NITE
Soon KZN will have its own television programme. The half-hour programme, KZN-2-Nite, is due
to be launched at the beginning of July and broadcast from Monday to Friday on SABC2 at 18h00.
It will broadcast alternately in Zulu English and Afrikaans and aims to present immediate news, current affairs and
local features.
If you have newsworthy arts information events happening in your area, contact KZN-2-Nite on 362-11 or let
D'ARTS office know on 261-6036 and we'll pass on the information.
Please also ensure D'ARTS knows about your event in time to catch the relevant issue - deadline 15th of the month!
D'ARTS has been used extensively for many years for programme and diary planning purposes by our local
television producers and the press, who swear they wouldn't know what to do without the publication! Are we great, or what?
