ARTISTS OF THE MONTH

For 1996 the African Art Centre in Guildhall Arcade will feature Artists of the Month and the February choice will be Gidla Gwala and Peter Mdunjane. Both artists make small sculptures of people, approximately 20cm high carved out of Jacarandha wood and painted in colours. Each person has its own poignant individuality.

Gidla Gwala, a new artist on the scene, learnt to carve from Peter Mdunjane.

Collectors should note that the African Art Centre also has some fine colour etchings by Judas Mahlangu. There are also some excellent small sculptures from Julius Mfethe. His exquisitely carved wooden animals show farm activities with people and animals inter- acting with ploughing or milking.
