Dr Neville Herrington is the new Vice Chairman of the Board and Metro Council representatives are Cllrs P Enock and L Naidoo.

ADVISORY COMMITTEES

Among the resolutions passed at the Annual General Meeting was one affecting Durban Arts's five Advisory Committees. The reduced grant from City Council meant that there were no funds for Unscheduled Spontaneous Projects (the main responsibility of the advisory committees), these committees have not met since the last Annual General Meeting in 1994.

However, the Articles of the Association decree that half the members on existing advisory committees be re-elected each year. Though advisory committees are dor-mant at present, it is hoped that they will become active as soon as increased funds become available.

PROPOSED

It was therefore proposed and agreed that the election of advisory committees be waived but that those members standing down who were eligible for re- election and nominated be asked to remain on standby for when the advisory committees are up and running again. At such time they will sit on the committee in an ad-hoc basis until the next Annual General Meeting.

NAME

There was also much discussion regarding the possible change of name of the Durban Arts Association. To ensure that Durban Arts stays in the forefront when funds are being granted to arts organisations, and thus ensure its future existence, the name of the association should reflect recent decrees by Government (soon to be gazetted) that such organisations should be known as 'councils'- already accepted by ACTAG). Therefore Durban Arts may shortly need to change its name to the `Durban Metro Arts Council', or a similar appropriate title, making it easier for Durban Arts to access resources from local, provincial and national government.
