DURBAN FOLK CLUB

The Durban Folk Club is ten years young!

In February 1986 folk singer Mim Erasmus invited people to her house with a view to starting a Folk Club in Durban, not knowing that NAFMA had been going strong in the '70s, and was delighted at former members' response.

With them and new blood the Durban Folk Club was soon up and running. The Blue Waters Hotel was their first venue, then the Winston Hotel before settling in at the Plaza Hotel, thanks to owner manager Ian Lindsay.

AIM

The aim of Durban Folk Club is to provide a platform for amateur and pro- fessional musicians, singers and songwriters in the "folk" vein. They are mostly solo guitar/vocal artists needing to try out and hone their skills. Under the leadership of many able chair- persons and committees they have done just that and even today this form of performance is unique to folk clubs all over the world.

There are annual folk festivals in most major cities and the culmination at Splashy Fenn each year as a platform for aspiring and established artists is proof of the value of the folk clubs in the artistic world.

BIRTHDAY

February 12 will see a huge birthday celebration at the Plaza Hotel. Mim Erasmus will head a line-up of most of the original DFC performers including Fiona Tozer, Dave Atkinson, Will Wallace, Richard Haslop, Jerry Faure- field, George Fleming, Lee Van den Berg, Pete and Liz Pomeroy, Keith Milne, Ian Lindsay, Jimmy Barnsley, Syd Kitchen and Dave Marks.

(N.B.: Mim Erasmus's has released her latest tape Over Africa and this is only available from 777-1669).
