First of all, welcome to 1996 and may it hold much promise and exposure for the
arts in Durban.
Secondly, welcome to the first edition of D'ARTS to go on the Internet, thus
putting us in the same league as international giants, Times and Newsweek, as
well as the South African newspaper, The Guardian. Support from our advertisers
has enabled us to take this step which we hope will put Durban Arts fairly and
squarely on the international map, thereby attracting foreign interest in the
city of Durban and, hopefully, possible funding or sponsorship of local artistes.
There's much of interest in this issue of D'ARTS, like the introduction of the
latest arts and craft meander in Amanzimtoti, news of the Playhouse Dance
Company's next season and the National Quilt Festival in July. Prize money worth
R6 500 is offered for SAMRO's innovative South African Christmas Carols
competition and if you can't get to Russia, then the next best is to spend time
on a Russian cruise ship!
The Sixth KZN Natal Arts Trust Biennale exhibition invites submissions from all
artists for this year's event which will form the foundation of the 1996
Standard Bank National Arts Festival major visual arts event.
