The 24-year-old dancer/choreographer Vincent Mantsoe is the winner of the 1995 Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Dance.
Born in Diepkloof, Soweto, he belonged to a youth club where he and his friends formed the Joy Dancers. Inspired by Michael Jackson, they created their own street dance style and entered competitions.
He became a successful candidate for Johannesburg's Moving Into Dance Company scholarship programme in 1989 and never looked back.
PROMISING
Mantsoe won the Vita Dance Umbrella Pick of the Fringe Award in 1992 and 1993 and was named the Vita Most Promising Male Dancer in 1993.
Last year he was the recipient of an FNB Vita Young Choreographer grant which required him to create a work for the main programme of the 1995 Dance Umbrella.
He has performed in Spain, Australia, the Netherlands and Germany and was awarded a two-month scholarship last year to attend Australia's Victoria College of Arts.
Mantsoe's Gula Matari will represent South Africa at the first competition of contemporary African choreography in Angola from November 17 to 20 this year.
WONDERBOY
Described as South Africa's current wonderboy of contemporary African choreography, he is now choreographer- in-residence and a principal dancer with Moving into Dance and has a commu- nity dance teacher's training course to his credit.
He's an enthusiastic teacher. "I want to give to others what I have learnt," he says.
Mantsoe's work will feature at this year's Grahamstown Festival.
