El Guappo is fully licensed and the food's pretty good, too! There is a set menu with a distinct Italian flavour and the cost of the evening, which includes the show, is R70 pp.

Booking is essential on 267-0424.

GRAHAMSTOWN FIGURES

The Grahamstown Foundation, organi-sers of the 1997 Standard Bank National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, have now done their arithmetic and come up with the results of this year's festival.

Total tickets sold on the main pro-gramme were 53 255 representing a 17% decrease compared to the high sales recorded last year. Fringe tickets sold were 105 270, which represented 12% decrease. The Village Green Craft Market attendance figures were also down by about 30%.

There's no denying that it costs a lot of money to `do' Grahamstown now either as participant or visitor and it seems that more people are opting for the smaller and highly popular festivals in their immediate areas.

It would therefore make sense for theatre production companies and crafters with small budgets to try their shows out on these smaller festivals to raise enough money for the `main' one because Grahamstown still remains the premier arts event in South Africa.

Although there were less people at this festival, it was generally agreed that it was the best event seen in the last 10 years. Some of the top shows can be seen at the Hilton Drama Festival (see back cover).

ARTS MANAGEMENT

Safmarine, through its community involvement programme, has donated the full cost of R8 619 for the next arts management workshop co-ordinated by Siphiwo Lubambo to be held from September 5 to 7 at the Glenmore Pastoral Centre.

The first workshop in this series was sponsored by Durban Arts and was con-sidered a `resounding success'.

It is planned to hold these workshops on a regular basis and Siphiwo Lubambo and Durban Arts fundraiser Lindi Gross are busy preparing proposals.

JOCK LEYDEN

Jock Leyden has become a household name in Durban through his distinctive newspaper cartoons in the Daily News.

Internationally acclaimed for his works, Jock was born in Grangemouth, Scot-land, in 1908. He is now to be honoured by the people of his birthplace with an exhibition of his works to be held at the Calendar House Museum in Grange-mouth from September 6 to October 18.

Jock has bowed to his advancing years and, unfortunately, will not be attending.

TRUST BURSARIES

Official application forms are now avai-lable for tertiary institutions wishing to apply for bursaries for their students from the Arts and Culture Trust of the President for 1998.

Bursaries are not granted to individuals. Only applications from institutions will be considered.

The Arts and Culture Trust of the President (ACT) was initiated by Nedcor Bank and Sun International as a major vehicle to provide sector funding in support of arts and culture while also serving as a marketing tool for these companies.

Last year 13 tertiary institutions received funds towards the support of students at all levels of study from the ACT bursary scheme. This scheme provides for students in the following areas: visual art (any or all of sculpture, painting, ceramics, photography etc.); film and video; dance; theatre; music; arts administration; arts education; heritage; community art and culture; craft and literature.

The board of trustees of ACT awards the bursaries to formal or non-formal trai-ning institutions only. The institutions then decide which students should benefit.

Applications are only eligible if submitted on the official forms. These are available from Nicky du Plessis. Phone 082 9010 735 or fax 81-5224. The deadline for applications is October 10.
