VEERAMANI BROTHERS FOR DURBAN

"In its quest to bring top class culture and value-oriented entertainment to South Africans, the Indian Academy of South Africa has scooped the world famous Veeramani Brothers for a South African tour this month," says Dr TP Naidoo, director of the Indian Academy.

"This is the second time around for this world class group," he adds. "They were a runaway success on their first visit to South Africa in 1994. Despite a tremen-dous clamour for their shows to be held in many centres, their itinerary proved to be too short."

This time round, however, the Indian Academy has ensured that they will have a more extensive tour which includes three performances in the Transvaal. The group includes the three Veeramani brothers: Raju Veeramani, Mani Bharathi and Kannan Veeramani. They will be accompanied by percussionist V R Madusuthanan, flautist B Vairavan, Vasudeva Rao on the tabla and veena vidwan KV Rajesh Muthuraman.

"Culture to surmise and make an impact must have a strong mass base," says TP Naidoo. "Shows that demand exorbitant fees can only cater for a select and financially well off people. The Indian Academy has always done its best to see that the programmes hosted by us are never too expensive to be seen."

The Durban leg of the Veeramani Brothers tour runs from September 10 to 24. For details phone 400- 2725.
