WEAPON SPONSOREDArticle 27, an arts and culture consul-tancy based in Durban, produces a monthly publication, The Cultural Weapon, as a means of keeping the local arts community and its international sup- porters and partners informed of deve-lopments within the South African cultural sphere. The publication combines "hard infor-mation" gathered through research along with newspaper clippings from news-papers and magazines around the country. "Sponsorship from the Royal Netherlands Embassy has ensured the financial viabi-lity of the publication. With a developing subscriber base it is hoped that The Cultural Weapon will at least break even within one year," says editor Mike van Graan. For details phone Mike van Graan on 81-5224 or Cell 082 900 3349 or write to PO Box 4062, Musgrave Road, 4062. |

CADENZAThe Natal Philharmonic Orchestra has some good friends. Besides the stalwart subscription holders who regularly attend the symphony concerts, Ugo Paladini - at his own expense - produces a regular publication titled Cadenza.A cadenza is a musical term meaning an elaborate ornamental flourish or an extended virtuoso section. Loosely explained, it shows off musical dexterity to the highest degree. That certainly applies to the NPO which is held in high regard throughout South Africa so it is fitting that a publication carrying news on NPO members and events should be so named. Cadenza is interesting and informative - the April issue contained a fun report on the concert when the NPO was accompanied by the guns of the Natal Field Artillery in the 1812 Overture! At a cost of R3, Cadenza is available at the Playhouse box office. |

PULSATING CELEBRATIONIt's a cure for broken hearts, celebrate,Sing praise to our fallen heroes and celebrate, Remember the dark and hopeless days and celebrate; Mourn our blood and tears which fall on the barren soil enriching it and celebrate, Hear those voices still humming the African song, late, afar, abroad, in gaol, some missing and celebrate, Hear the sound of the trumpet made of the Big African Elephant's Ivory, Calling at the crack of dawn to wake and inspire the nation, Chant and dance to the beat of the African drum, Still united your flesh and soul, celebrate. Ignore not the Cry of the African Wolf piercing the night's silence and fading, Savour that African Elephant's memory long as long as the river Nile. Hail the roar and bravery of the African King of the jungle, Prolong and nurture the wisdom of the African Hare, Embrace the big and passionate heart of the African Kudu, Count your might by your conquests, Your kindness by your smiles and your depth by your steadiness, Celebrate Africa celebrate. Come children, Dark or Light, and celebrate, Be All blind, join hands and set free the song, Sing louder than loud and resurrect Ubuntu, Cry out the pain, cough out the anger. Spit off the hatred, Grudges are on a wane. Together celebrate your diversity, The bygones not so long gone shall never return, Indeed you are Free at last, South Africa celebrate your Freedom.
