The next workshop is on July 5 and the fee of R8 includes tea and raffle.

TOP PHOTOGRAPHY

The Tatham Art Gallery in Pieter-maritzburg will host the intriguing exhi-bition, Material Evidence, recently seen at the NSA Gallery in Durban. An im-pressive collection of multi-faceted work by Neville Gabie and Alastair Whitton, the exhibition runs from July 3 to 27.

South African-born Gabie says "My concern is for the urban and rural landscape. Particular to both, I seek out places in a state of abandoned buildings. Areas in which the evidence of previous habitation might have left on the ground traces, which reveal something of the political, emotional or cultural shifts taking place in South Africa."

LANDSCAPES

Alastair Whitton believes that, "like the lives of those who inhabit it, the South African landscape is vulnerable. In a state of transition South Africa bears the wounds and scars of its past. In all its apparent grandeur this ancient land is not immune to the violence consuming it."

There will be two public walkabouts of the exhibition: by Alastair Whitton on July 8, and by Neville Gabie on July 23. Both walkabouts are free and take place at 13h10. The Tatham Art Gallery is situated opposite the City Hall in Commercial Road in Pietermaritzburg.

IMAGES FROM THE EDGE

Once a year the NSA asks professional artists to take part in an invited exhibition. This year the title of this event is Images from the Edge and it will consist of works from 50 women artists from around the country to lead up to National Women's Day on August 9.

Images from the Edge

will conjure up different images for everyone. According to the organisers, sharing a South African past - and being female - will give women artists a kind of collective subconscious.

"All of us have had 'from the edge' experiences and emotions," say the organisers, "but no limits have been set for the artists so the theme should pro-duce interesting work from our leading female artists."

The exhibition will be held in the main and mezzanine galleries of the NSA from July 20 to August 7.
