NSA FILM SHOWS

The NSA is planning a season of monthly film shows beginning on April 20 with Beautiful Thing, directed by Hettie McDonald, and continuing until the end of November.

Films will be screened at the Berea Centre at 19h30 and the season will be opened by well-known TV personality Barry Ronge who has donated his services for this fund-raising effort.

The aims of the season are to support the five workshops which constitute the out-reach programme of the NSA and to increase public awareness of the organisation.

The NSA not only exhibits the work of artists at its gallery in Bulwer Road, but fosters creative work in all sections of the community. It, in fact, serves as a cultural centre with a social conscience.

Season tickets have been sold out but `one-offs' will be available each month as holders find they cannot attend a screening for one reason or another. To secure these, phone Gloria Hoff at the NSA on 223-6867/8.

Most of the films are from the Continent and will be of a high quality `art' nature.

FRENCH FILM

The Alliance Fran‡aise will screen the film, L.627, on April 16 at 19h00 in the Alliance Fran‡aise head-quarters audito-rium, 22 Sutton Crescent, Morningside.

Directed by Bertrand Tavernier and starring Didier Bezace, Charlotte Kady, Jean-Paul Comart and Nils Tavernier, L.627 is a crime thriller that takes a no-holds-barred look at the war against drugs in Paris.

It has been acclaimed as one of Tavernier's best and most powerful films.

GONZALEZ AT TATHAM

The Tatham Art Gallery will screen the film, Gonzalez, on April 22 and 24 at 13h10. The Spanish sculptor Julio Gonzalez (1876-1942) has been described as the greatest "unknown" artist of the 20th century.

The film traces his background in the Catalan metal-working tradition and shows how his innovative use of iron and scrap metal in sculpture profoundly influenced Picasso and other artists.
