Children's rights 301 x 299, linocut
Sibusiso Sabela
The children's clause is one of the most comprehensive, covering a wide range of rights. Among them are the right of a child to a name and appropriate care, the right to protection from neglect, abuse, and armed conflict, the right to be protected from work unsuitable to the child's well-being and the right to receive special, explicitly defined, treatment from the justice system. The image depicting this complex clause was the winning entry of a competition organised among school children in Kwa- Zulu-Natal. The young artist is 13-year-old Sibusiso Sabela from Umlazi Township near Durban, who attends Bashokuhle H.P. School. His image depicts a bird's-eye-view of a school playground where children are playing. Crutches and wheelchairs indicate that the children are handicapped, but that doesn't stop them from enjoying themselves. Sibusiso expresses his particular concern for these most vulnerable children of our society, and reminds us that they need our special love and care. It is important that we facilitate their education, and as the young artist's image clearly demonstrates, their handicap is no reason not to participate in sports.
